Causes of Bedwetting

Bed wetting or its medical term enuresis, is involuntary urination in children over 6 years old. It occurs in about 5% of children over 10 years old.  It is not an emotional problem, just a developmental delay.

The issue of bed wetting is not widely discussed which has led to there being many myths about what causes it and how to solve it.  It is not directly related to the amount of water that a child drinks before they go to bed.  It is not due to emotional stress that the child is dealing with and it cannot be fixed by talking about it because the child has no conscious control over it.

There is 2 causes of bedwetting. Firstly the body hasn’t learnt to reduce the production of urine during the night and secondly the body hasn’t learnt to wake the child up when the bladder is full.  Learning these 2 lessons is done by making neural connections at the subconscious level and once learnt, the body takes care of these functions while the child is sleeping.

Learning lessons at a subconscious level is like learning to drive a stick shift. It takes a lot of practise and then one day you learn it and can do it without thinking for ever.  Most treatments of bed wetting don’t work because they are trying to force these connections at the surface level which takes a long time and usually just ends in frustration before the connections are made.
